“The New York Experience Vocal Program” with Dr. Tamara Hardesty was fun and overall a great learning experience. I had the chance to explore the city, meet mainstream coaches and voice teachers, and attend master classes. After a long week of vigorous work, we had the opportunity to showcase our talent and the new techniques that we learned in a recital at the National Opera Center. I would also like to add that we tried several New York style dishes along the way! I can’t wait until next year!!
Rakeeta Laird, soprano (2016)
During my "New York Experience" I was able to make connections to teachers and professors of voice that are highly sought after. My interest in vocal health and anatomy was peaked and I was given an abundance of information and starting places as to where to begin research. I saw my first Operas at the Met which is quite the experience in its self, and to see three in one week was just amazing. In seeing those shows I was able to fall in love with the art that is opera, which serves me well as a vocalist. Also in going to the Master Classes we attended I was able to learn a tremendous amount about the art of how to prepare a piece of vocal literature, skills that will help with any piece of music that I learn. Overall my time in New York City was exciting
and full of learning experiences. I am forever thankful to Dr. Hardesty for giving me the opportunity of self discovery, in and out of her studio.
Mary Allison Hamby, soprano (2016)
My week in New York City with Dr. Tamara Hardesty was truly life changing. Through experiences such as master classes and private lessons, I was provided with an environment to grow as a singer, a performer, and as a person. Dr. Hardesty's teaching style is very unique, in that it is not too harsh, but also not overly cautious. Her directions are precise, informed, and easy to understand, and she always has multiple ways of explaining concepts so that her students may utilize them in their practices and performances. Because of this wonderful opportunity given to me because of Dr. Tamara Hardesty, I now place even more importance on the tiny details that make a good performance a GREAT performance. In addition, my New York experience has helped me to become a more confident, aware person.
